The One With eBooks Part 2

July 11, 2009 at 3:05 pm (Days of my Life (Journal))

Alright I’ve done some more research on how to sell stuff online and apparently it’s quite easy to do it and have it done securely as well.
By the way, this post might sound like an advertisement but it’s not.

There are basically two major items here.

- Paypal
- E-Junkie

I’m sure we’ve all heard of paypal but if you haven’t then it’s basically this website that allows you to easily send or receive money online, by creating an account (totally free) and then topping it up with money from either your bank account or your credit card.

E-Junkie is basically what’s going to turn the website an online shop.

What E-Junkie does is that it will link up with my paypal account and create a ‘Buy now’ button. If you want to buy my eBook, all you have to do is click that button and it’ll take you to a paypal page where you fill in your account (This means you need to have a paypal account of course) details to make the payment.
I think it might be possible to just pay through a credit card without a paypal account too.

Once you’ve made the payment, E-Junkie will automatically redirect you to a secured page with a randomly generated web address. All you have to do is click that address and you’ll be able to download my eBook straight from their servers. The randomly generated web address is actually to help me prevent people from spreading the link to other people. And it adds another security layer for me by allowing me to set an expiry date for that link. This means that after you receive your link and you’ve downloaded it, I can set the link to expire after a certain amount of days or after a certain amount of downloads.

Of course, if you need to download the file again but the link has expired, I can easily arrange for some validation thing like a screenshot of the payment transfer, and then I’ll just either e-mail you the file or re-activate your download link.

In other words, with E-Junkie, you don’t have to wait for me to send you the eBook after you’ve made your payment. And I don’t have to worry about making sure that every single person who made a payment has received their eBook. It’s all automatic.

And I can easily create step-by-step guides for the entire process and also on how to create your own paypal account.

Everything up there is free for you except the part where you pay me money for the eBook. But I am required to pay a monthly fee of 5USD for the E-Junkie service, which to me sounds very cheap and reasonable considering all the services that they’re providing.

Ultimately what this means is that it is very possible for me to create a safe and secured online shop – much safer and much more secured than most blogshops that you shop at.

And that’s really the most important thing.

With that issue settled, I think it’s very likely that I’ll be selling eBooks in the future once I’m done with Project M.I.G.H.T. which, again, I assure you will remain free. I might, however, compile the entire Project M.I.G.H.T. series into a single eBook, or five different eBooks, and sell them as a bundle for like $5 or $10 (lol, it’s so cheap yet I still make a killing) which means it’ll only cost you a dollar or two for each story. Then maybe I’ll employ some simple marketing strategies and add like exclusive companion stories to the bundle to trick lure entice convince you guys into buying it =D

So what’s next?

More research.

I need to find out more about this whole online shop thing. I’ll be asking my friends who have their own online shops to see if there are any problems that they face that I should take note of, or whether they have any advice for me. And then I’ll probably get another poll up or a survey to see how willing people are to pay $5 for an eBook, or whether they’re even interested in buying an eBook for that matter.

Honestly though, unless the survey comes back with like a 5% will buy and 95% will not buy result, I’m most probably going to do it.

Perspectives?

July 10, 2009 at 5:15 pm (Specimen Three: Geralt)

Well, since the whole idea of the Project M.I.G.H.T. series is for me to better myself as a writer which is to also experiment different writing styles, why not try writing a different perspective?

Specimen One was your typical third-person narrative.

Specimen Two added more of my voice into the third-person narrative by breaking down the fourth wall.

Specimen Three shall be a first-person narrative?

Sounds fun.

I’ll try it out then =)

– I’ll get part two of The One About eBooks up after I’ve done some more research into the subject.

The One About eBooks – Part 1

July 9, 2009 at 8:52 pm (Days of my Life (Journal), The Pen is NOT Mightier)

Ever since I saw that stupid advertisement which really isn’t that stupid at all, I’ve been thinking about selling ebooks every single day.

I’m 19.

I need money.

I, apparently, can write moderately entertaining stuff.

You have money.

I want your money.

Ignore the last two statements =X

Now, I believe that ultimately most authors write because they want their works to be read, or they just want to entertain people with their works. And thus if they’re able to, they would be more than happy to share their works for free. But realistically speaking that is quite impossible because we have bills to pay, girlfriends to pamper, and games to buy. All of which requires money.

Selling eBooks sound like a good idea.

In fact, we already have a local author who is doing quite well as a self-published author. He doesn’t sell eBooks though but he prints his own works and sell them through online transaction. And behind him is a team of two girls who assist him with all the managerial matters.

Oh by the way his name is Low Kay Hwa.

According to his website, he has sold over 20,000 copies of his works in both Singapore and Malaysia, which is honestly very impressive for an author his age.

The guy started writing a couple of years ago, I remember reading his first story in secondary school and felt completely scammed when I realized that I had to pay for the last two or three chapters. But I admitted that it was a good - albeit a little underhanded to me - marketing strategy because, hey, the guy sold more than 20,000 copies already. He’s doing something right.

Basically what he has proven is that the Singapore market will accept self-published fiction authors. And since he uses online transaction, he has also proven that such platform of payment is welcomed as well.

Both of which are good for me if I intend to sell eBooks.

And so the golden question now is… should I do it?

Long or Short?

July 9, 2009 at 12:37 am (Specimen Three: Geralt)

I currently at 11,000 words for the first draft of Specimen Three – yeap, got the flow back - and at this number of words, it’s usually the seventh or sixth chapter but right now I’m only at the third O.o

Did I plan this? Not really. I end a chapter when I feel like it – there’s no formula.

I like short chapters because then it’s easier to just stop at the end of one chapter if I have something else to attend to. Long chapters might take a while to complete and I don’t really like to stop reading in the middle of a chapter.

Right now I don’t really see the benefits of a long chapter, but I’ll keep writing in the same manner and see if I continue to churn out really long chapters. If I do then maybe I’ll take this opportunity to try out these really long chapters and see if it does make the reading experience better.

And in case you’re wondering, the third specimen is going to make his appearance in Specimen Two: Ixion very soon =)

The One With Selling E-Books

July 5, 2009 at 2:38 pm (Days of my Life (Journal), The Pen is NOT Mightier)

Calm down, Project M.I.G.H.T. is still free and it’ll remain like that even after the very last story is completely released.

Anyway, I was browsing a tech forum just now to look at some models of e-books readers - it’s cheaper to buy a bloody nuke - and I stumbled across this stupid automated spam that was advertising for some “Get rich by selling e-books” site, which is of course most likely a scam.

But the idea was rather intriguing.

The one thing that I don’t like about e-books is that it’s very easy to pirate them online, as you’re already providing the digital file and all a pirate needs to do is upload the file on some free hosting site. And that’s why if I ever get published one day, I’ll definitely request that my book does not get sold as an e-book after a certain amount of time have passed.

However, right now, selling e-books might not be that bad of an idea. In Singapore, most paperback books will cost you from S$15 onwards and hard-cover books can go as high as S$50. If I were to write a story and sell it as a e-book, I can easily let it go at as low as S$5 and still make a killing, lol. And that’s like less than USD$2.50 for all of you in America. Don’t get me started on Europe’s currency.

And the main idea isn’t even to make money in the first place. The idea is to actually see whether people are willing to pay to read my works, and if people do then this can be a very good thing for me in the future when I’m writing a cover letter to a potential publisher – not to mention a major confidence boost.

In fact, if I’m never able to get published traditionally, I don’t see why it’s not possible for me to find a few talented friends and create an encryption software to prevent e-book piracy. They can make a profit selling the software while I can make a profit selling e-books, and you guys will save a hell lot of money to read my stories as compared to if I were to sell them paperback like another local self-published author.

So yeah, I’m definitely going to do more research on this and see if this is a feasible idea. Now I don’t usually get a lot of comments on this blog, but for those of you who are reading this, I’d like to ask for your opinion.

My trademark grammatical errors and typos might not even be a problem since I’ll most probably hire a professional to proof-read the e-book before I sell it.

edit: Special thanks to Matthew for the follow conversion rates

S$5 = US$3.441
S$5 = 2.106 Pounds
S$5 = 2.460 Euros

Now I say this without knowing the market price of e-books around the length of 75,000 words, but bloody hell that’s really cheap for a book, lol. I mean if you look at the Singapore currency, $5, alright it’s reasonably cheap but when you look at the other currencies, it is like ridiculously cheap. I think the price alone should deter readers from going through the trouble of trying to get a pirated copy.
